Morning prayer: 5 short prayers to start your day

By Sophie · October 19, 2026 · 3 min read

The first minutes of the day set its tone. A short prayer before the phone, the news and the to-do list gives the morning to God first, and it takes less time than a cup of coffee.

Below are five morning prayers you can read as written or make your own, each paired with a verse to carry through the day.

Why pray in the morning

Scripture returns to the morning again and again. The psalmist speaks to God before the day begins:

“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.”
Psalm 5:3

Jesus did the same, finding a quiet place before the crowds arrived:

“And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.”
Mark 1:35

A morning prayer can be a few sentences. Its strength comes from being the first thing you say each day.

1. A prayer for a new day

Lord, thank you for this new day. Before I rush into it, I give it to you. Guide my words, my work and my choices, and help me notice the people you put in my path. Amen.
“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22-23

2. A prayer for strength

Father, I do not know everything today will ask of me, and I know you go before me. Give me strength for what is hard and patience for what is slow. When I grow tired, renew me. Amen.
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:31

3. A prayer for guidance

God, I have decisions to make today, small and large. Help me trust you more than my own understanding, and show me the next right step. Amen.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6

4. A prayer for peace

Lord, before the worries of the day crowd in, I bring them to you. Take what I cannot carry. Let your peace guard my heart and my mind today. Amen.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7

5. A prayer of thanks

Thank you, God, for waking me up, for breath, for the people I love and for mercies I have not even noticed yet. Let gratitude shape how I see this day. Amen.
“This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Psalm 118:24
