Prayer for anxiety: 7 prayers for an anxious heart and mind

A prayer for anxiety is a way of handing your worries to God when your mind will not rest. It can be a long conversation or a single sentence said with a racing heart.
Below are seven prayers for anxiety you can pray as written or make your own, each paired with a verse. If anxiety is heavy or constant, prayer belongs alongside help from a doctor or counselor, and both can be part of how God cares for you.
What the Bible says about anxiety
Paul gives a clear instruction for anxious moments, with a promise attached:
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Peter adds the reason we can let go:
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
1. A prayer for anxiety
Lord, my mind is full of worry and I cannot quiet it on my own. I bring You every fear I am carrying, one by one. Take what I cannot hold. Replace my anxious thoughts with Your peace, the peace that guards my heart and mind. Amen.
“In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.”
2. A short prayer for an anxious moment
For a racing heart, a meeting you dread or a panic that comes out of nowhere:
Lord, I am afraid. You are with me. Hold me now. Amen.
Breathe slowly and repeat it as many times as you need.
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
3. A prayer for anxious thoughts at night
Father, it is late and my thoughts keep racing. I hand You the conversations I keep replaying and the problems I cannot solve tonight. Give my mind rest and my body sleep. Tomorrow is in Your hands. Amen.
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
4. A prayer for anxiety about the future
God, I do not know what is coming and the not knowing frightens me. Teach me to live one day at a time. Give me what I need for today, and help me trust You with what I cannot see yet. Amen.
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
5. A prayer for anxiety about health
Lord, I am worried about my health, or the health of someone I love. Calm my fears while we wait for answers. Give wisdom to the doctors, courage for every appointment and peace for the nights in between. Amen.
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
6. A prayer for a loved one with anxiety
Father, someone I love is struggling with anxiety. Be close to them in their fear. Give them rest, good help and people who understand. Show me how to be patient and present without trying to fix everything. Amen.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
7. A prayer of trust
Lord, You have carried me before and You will carry me again. I choose to trust You today, even with my fears still here. Give me a sound mind and a quiet heart. Amen.
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
Praying when anxiety will not leave
- Pray the same short prayer again. Repetition is a form of trust, and the Psalms repeat themselves often.
- Pair prayer with your breath. Breathe in on Lord, You are with me; breathe out on I give You this fear.
- Write the worry down. Put it on paper, pray over it, then close the notebook.
- Ask for help. If anxiety affects your sleep, work or health, talk to a doctor or a counselor. Seeking care is wise and sits well with faith.

Holy Bible offers a calm prayer and a verse every day, and can read prayers aloud when reading feels like too much.
