We cannot watch over everyone we love every moment. A prayer for protection puts them, and ourselves, in the care of the One who can.
Below are seven prayers for protection you can pray as written or make your own, each paired with a verse. Each one is an act of trust, prayed alongside the ordinary care we owe each other.
What the Bible says about God's protection
Psalm 91 is the best-known psalm of protection. It opens with a picture of shelter:
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
Jesus also prayed for His disciples' protection, the night before the cross:
“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.”
He asked the Father to keep them from evil while they stayed in the world. That is the shape of most prayers for protection.
1. A prayer for protection over my family
Lord, I place my family in Your hands today. Watch over each of us wherever we go. Keep us from harm, from accidents and from evil, and bring us home safely tonight. Amen.
“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
2. A prayer for my children's protection
Father, my children are Yours before they are mine. Protect them at school, on the road and online. Guard their hearts and minds, give them wise friends, and let them always know they are loved. Amen.
“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”
3. A prayer for protection over my home
God, bless this home and everyone who lives in it. Let it be a place of peace and safety. Keep it from harm by day and by night, and let everyone who walks through the door feel welcome. Amen.
“The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”
4. A prayer for safe travel
Lord, as I set out on this journey, go with me. Keep me alert on the road, guide those who travel around me, and bring me safely to where I am going and back home again. Amen.
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
5. A prayer for protection at night
Father, the day is over and the house is quiet. Watch over us while we sleep. Keep fear and danger far from our door, and let us wake up safe and rested. Amen.
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
6. A prayer for protection at work
God, keep me safe at work today, in body and in spirit. Protect me from accidents, from unfair treatment and from the stress that wears me down. Help me do my work well and come home in peace. Amen.
“Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.”
7. A prayer for protection from evil
Lord Jesus, You have overcome evil. Keep me from temptation and from anything that would pull me away from You. Clothe me with Your strength and Your truth, and let nothing separate me from Your love. Amen.
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
Praying for protection every day
- Pray before leaving the house. A ten-second prayer at the door is a good habit for the whole family.
- Name people one by one. Praying for each person by name keeps the prayer personal.
- Keep doing your part. Seatbelts, locked doors and wise choices belong with the prayer.
- Give thanks for protection you noticed. Gratitude helps you see how often you were kept.
