A short prayer is a few honest words spoken to God, short enough to say on the way to work, in a waiting room or as you fall asleep. God listens to the heart more than to the length.
Below are eighteen short prayers: four taken from the Bible itself, and fourteen for the moments of an ordinary day.
Short prayers from the Bible
Some of the most powerful prayers in Scripture are a single line. A mother asked Jesus for help with three words:
“Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.”
A tax collector who felt unworthy to look up prayed this:
“And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.”
A father, torn between faith and doubt, cried out:
“And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”
And a dying man beside Jesus asked only to be remembered:
“And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.”
Each of these can be prayed word for word today.
Short morning prayers
Lord, this day is Yours. Walk with me through it. Amen.
Thank You for this new morning. Guide my words and my work today. Amen.
Short prayers for anxiety
Lord, I am afraid. You are with me. Hold me now. Amen.
Father, I give You this worry. Give me Your peace instead. Amen.
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
Short prayers for strength
God, I have nothing left. Be my strength today. Amen.
Lord, help me take the next step. Amen.
Short prayers of thanks
Thank You, Lord, for every good thing in this day. Amen.
Thank You for the people I love and for loving me first. Amen.
Short prayers for guidance
Lord, show me the way I should go. Amen.
Give me wisdom for this decision, and peace with what You show me. Amen.
Short prayers for family and others
Lord, bless my family and keep them safe today. Amen.
Father, be close to my friend who is struggling. Amen.
Short night prayers
Lord, I give You this day, the good and the bad. Let me sleep in Your peace. Amen.
Forgive me where I failed today, and help me begin again tomorrow. Amen.
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
Why short prayers matter
Jesus warned against piling up words to be heard:
“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”
Short prayers keep us talking to God through the whole day as well as at set times. Paul calls this praying without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17): a life where a quick word to God becomes natural.
For longer prayers, read our morning prayers, night prayers or prayers for anxiety.
Holy Bible offers a short prayer and a verse every day, on your Home Screen and read aloud if you wish.
Questions
What is the shortest prayer in the Bible?
Lord, help me (Matthew 15:25) is one of the shortest. Peter's cry, Lord, save me, as he sank in the water (Matthew 14:30) is another.
Are short prayers as good as long ones?
Yes. Jesus taught that God does not hear us for our many words (Matthew 6:7-8). A short, sincere prayer is a real prayer.
What is a good short prayer for every day?
Lord, this day is Yours. Walk with me through it. It fits any morning and can be repeated through the day.
